Verdant Cavern is where your very first trial in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will take place. It can only be reached by taking Route 2 on Melemele Island.

When you begin the trial, Captain Ilima will tell you to defeat the 3 Pokemon that lurk in the dens. You also won’t be able to catch any of the Pokemon until the trial is complete. Approach each Pokemon den to find the Pokemon you will battle. In Pokemon Ultra Sun this will be Yungoos and Gumshoos and in Pokemon Ultra Moon this will be Alolan Rattata and Alolan Raticate.



The first Pokemon will be in the den immediately to the right. When you reach it, press A to initiate the battle with either Rattata or Yungoos. The next Pokemon will be at the the next den up ahead, but be sure to pick up the Super Potion on the ground on your way there.



Take the ramp going up to the left and take another left to pick up a TM31 Brick Break. Turn around and continue north until you can walk across the wooden plank. Go all the way to the right until you reach another ramp.



Walk up the ramp and crawl through the hole, grab the Super Potion, and jump down to the den on the left. When you explore the den, it will tell you there’s nothing inside and the Pokemon will run to another den.



Jump down, take a left, and head up the ramp to the next den in the back and on the right. The same situation will happen. Follow the path that passes the Trial Guide and the Verdant Cavern exit.



Keep walking until you can jump down and explore the next den. It will then return to its first location. Grab the X-Defense, jump down, walk across the wooden plank again, and before you can get to the den, Team Skull Grunts will attempt to stop you from completing your trial.

They will fail but prove to be useful in the end. Take the ramp on the right back up and through the hole again. Jump down and finally face the last Pokemon which will be an Alolan Raticate or Gumshoos.



Show the Trial Guide you’ve completed your trial and prepare to face a Totem Alolan Raticate or Totem Gumshoos.

After defeating the Totem Pokemon, Ilima will give you Normalium Z and 10 Great Balls. He will also heal your Pokemon. On your way out, you might notice a path with rocks blocking the way. Return here when you get Tauros as a Poke Ride and follow this path to retrieve TM46 Thief.



Before leaving, you’ll run into those strange robot people again. You can also catch the Pokemon in the cavern. Once you’ve left Verdant Cavern, head north from the cave entrance to continue onto Route 3, the first step to completing your first Grand Trial!
